Psalm 33:13-15

Psalm 33:13 Yahveh looks down from the sky; he sees all children of Adam.

Psalm 33:14 He looks in on1 all the inhabitants of the land from his dwelling place.

Psalm 33:15 He forms the hearts of them all; he perceives all their works.

for invisible people

Perhaps you think you are too small to be noticed. Maybe you think that what you think, say, or do is too insignificant to matter. think again. God formed you. He knows what you are thinking and he hears what you are saying and sees what you are doing. It matters to him.

Lord, thank you that none of us is invisible.

a word for good citizens

Psalm 33:10-12

Psalm 33:10 Yahveh frustrates the advice of the nations; he thwarts the plans of the peoples.

Psalm 33:11 The advice of Yahveh stands permanently, the plans of his heart from generation to generation.

Psalm 33:12 Fortunate is the nation whose God is Yahveh – the people he has chosen to be his own possession!

a word for good citizens

I would never encourage any people to be a bad citizens of the nation they are living in. But I would encourage good citizens to think outside the box of good citizenship. God is the God of the universe. His will goes beyond the scope of my country’s constitution. His advice frustrates that of all the nations, because it stands permanently.

As Christians, we are used to thinking outside our national boxes because we have been given a Great Commission by Christ to reach all nations for him.

And, as good citizens ourselves, we Christians need to always be thinking of how we can make our nations God’s own possession. That cannot happen to any nation perfectly in this age until Christ returns. But that should never stop us from doing all we can to win our nation for him.

Lord, may we be good citizens, and great disciples.

ex nihilo

Psalm 33:6-9

Psalm 33:6 The skies were made by the word of Yahveh, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.

Psalm 33:7 He gathers the water of the sea into a heap; he puts the depths into storehouses.

Psalm 33:8 Let the whole land fear Yahveh; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him

Psalm 33:9 because he spoke, and it came into being; he commanded, and it came into existence.

ex nihilo

You don’t really believe in a creator unless you are willing to accept that there is a being who made a command, and the universe came into existence. If you think that God had to start with some raw material to fashion the universe, you are thinking about another god, not the God of the Bible. He created ex-nihilo (out of nothing).

Why is this important for worship? When we encounter God in worship, we express our gratitude for his work in bringing us into existence, and ask him to finish that work by making us what he wants us to become. Worship involves both praise and prayer – both thanksgiving and supplication.

Lord, we declare our faith in the God who brought everything into existence.

worship God because he is right

Psalm 33:4-5

Psalm 33:4 Because the word of Yahveh is right, and all his work is trustworthy.

Psalm 33:5 He loves righteousness and justice; the land is full of Yahveh’s covenant faithfulness.

worship God because he is right

We cannot succeed in worship if we harbor doubts of God’s holiness and righteousness. We have to believe that his word is right and his work is trustworthy. If we lack assurance of that basic truth, we need to ask his forgiveness before we begin to worship.

Next, we have to know that no matter how bad the world gets, it is still being governed by our good God. God’s covenant faithfulness is not reflected by everything on the earth, but it is everywhere on the earth.

Thank you Lord, for your sovereign grace and goodness.

how to worship

Psalm 33:1-3

Psalm 33:1 Give a ringing cry, you righteous ones in Yahveh; praise from the upright is beautiful.

Psalm 33:2 Praise Yahveh with the lyre; make music to him with a ten-stringed harp.

Psalm 33:3 Sing a new song to him; play skillfully on the strings, with a joyful shout.

how to worship

This psalmist begins with an invitation to worship and then spends then spends the rest of the psalm explaining why we should worship. But this first part is not about why we should worship. It explains how to worship.

  • Worship genuinely, because praise from the upright is beautiful. Praise from the wicked is hypocrisy.
  • Worship skillfully, because time spend in developing music gifts is time well-spent.
  • Worship intensely, with a ringing cry and a joyful shout. Worship is not rest. It’s a work-sacrifice in honor of God who is worth the effort.

We are approaching the throne of our Creator King. We need to do it right.

the shield of covenant faithfulness

Psalm 32:10-11

Psalm 32:10 Many times of anguish1 will come to the wicked, but the one who trusts in Yahveh has covenant faithfulness surrounding him.

Psalm 32:11 Be happy in Yahveh and celebrate, you righteous ones; give a ringing cry, all you upright in heart.

the shield of covenant faithfulness

This is not exactly a guarantee that as believers we will never experience times of anguish. Instead, the psalmist is saying that the ones trusting in God and following his road will have a special shield surrounding them. That shield is God’s covenant faithfulness. Those outside the covenant will not experience the protection. Of all the things people might do to protect themselves, this one is the most urgent.

Lord, surround us with your shield.

he wants to show us the road

Psalm 32:8-9

Psalm 32:8 I will give you insight and show you the road to go on; with my eye on you, I will consult with you.

Psalm 32:9 Do not be like a horse or mule, without perception, that must be controlled with bit and bridle or else it will not come near you.

he wants to show us the road

The context of this bit of assurance is a psalm about God’s forgiveness. The Lord assures us that he is not far off in the distance. He is right here with us. He does not want to take us over so that we have no control over what we do. For that reason, he is always ready to consult with us.

What does this have to do with God’s forgiveness? Well – despite the saying to the contrary — it is always better to seek permission rather than do something that requires forgiveness. He wants to show us the road that enables us to learn his way without being corrected by suffering.

Lord, give us the wisdom to stop acting like mules, and learn your road.

keeping God on speed-dial

Psalm 32:6-7

Psalm 32:6 This is why everyone who is faithful should pray to you immediately. When great floodwaters come, they will not capture him.

Psalm 32:7 You are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.(Selah).

keeping God on speed-dial

David says that God is his hiding place and protector, but he does not say that God prevents the floodwaters from coming. Rather, he says that when the floodwaters come, they will not capture him. He has learned to let God be his protector by praying to God immediately as soon as the trouble begins.

A relationship with God is not disaster insurance. Godly people are not immune to the results of the depravity of humanity or the sometimes catastrophic results of creation’s downward slide.1 But we do have a helper we call call to at any time.

Lord, give us the wisdom to keep you on speed-dial.

the heavy hand

img_1774-4

Psalm 32:3-5

Psalm 32:3 When I kept silent, my bones wore thin from my groaning all day long

Psalm 32:4 because your hand was heavy on me day and night; my strength was drained as by the summer’s heat. (Selah).

Psalm 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not conceal my violation. I said, “I will confess my crime to Yahveh,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin. (Selah).

the heavy hand

Yesterday I noted that when my wife and I were on the Appalachian Trail last year, I carried most of our weight because my back was stronger. Fortunately I had a well-made backpack, and a stronger back, so the weight was not a major obstacle for me.

No matter how well-made and ultralight a backpack is, however, the weight is still a problem. The longer you walk, the heavier it gets. I was going to say the heavier it seems to get, but that’s not accurate. After weeks on the trail, a backpack actually gets heavier because of the dirt and sweat it accumulates. Because of a combination of the extra weight and the extra fatigue, the pack sometimes felt like a thousand pounds.

David described his unforgiven sin as the heavy hand of God on him, wearing him down. There was a solution to that problem: confession. As long as he kept silent, the weight just got heavier and heavier.

Lord, we are tired of carrying around all this excess baggage. We confess our sins and crimes to you. Free us, heavenly Father.

the heavy lifting

img_2089

Psalm 32:1-2

Psalm 32:11 How fortunate is the one whose crime is forgiven, whose mistake2 is covered!

Psalm 32:2 How fortunate is a person whom Yahveh does not charge with violation and in whose breath is no deceit!

the heavy lifting

When we were on the Appalachian Trail last year, I carried most of our weight because my back was stronger. Fortunately I had a well-made backpack, and a stronger back, so the weight was not a major obstacle for me. It was my contribution to the hike.

What is being celebrated here is neither the size of one’s past sin nor the size of one’s present personal goodness. What matters is the sovereign choice of a loving God to forgive. He can lift the largest weight, and cover the worst mistake. He is not reluctant to forgive: it’s what he does.

Lord, we give our past to you, because we want to be free. Thank you for doing the heavy lifting.
