1 Thessalonians 4:13-15 (JDV)

1 Thessalonians 4:13 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope
1 Thessalonians 4:14 because if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in the same way, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:15 You see, we say this to you by a word from the Lord: We who are still alive at the Lord’s coming will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep

in the same way

Paul wanted the Thessalonian believers to understand something essential about their brothers and sisters who had died: they were not lost, forgotten, or abandoned. Their bodies rested in the sleep of death, but that sleep was temporary. It was not the final word.

The foundation of this hope was Christ Himself.
He had died.
He had been buried.
He had been raised.

And because He was raised, those who belong to Him will share in that same victory. Paul anchors everything in the resurrection of Jesus. If Christ lives, then His people will live. If Christ rose, then His people will rise. Death is not the end for the believer—it is sleep before awakening.

Paul’s message was not sentimental comfort. It was theological certainty. The Thessalonians did not need to grieve like those who had no hope, because their loved ones were not gone forever. They were waiting for the same moment Paul was waiting for—the return of Christ, when the dead in Christ will rise and the living will be gathered with them.

This is the Christian hope:
Not escape from the body,
but resurrection of the body.
Not a disembodied afterlife,
but restored life in the presence of the Lord.

Paul wanted them to know that God’s faithfulness extends beyond the grave. The dead are not disadvantaged. They are not left behind. They will be the first to rise when Christ appears. Their sleep will end in glory.

It is a hope that still steadies the heart today.

Lord, thank you that those who sleep in Christ will rise with Him, and that none who belong to you will ever be abandoned.
