Teaching Outline: Colossians 3:16 (LSB)

Theme:

I. Setting the Context: A Life Shaped From the Inside Out

• Colossians 3 describes the new life believers possess in Christ — a life marked by putting off the old self and putting on the new.
• Verse 16 reveals the engine of that new life: the indwelling Word of Christ.
• Christianity is not behavior modification; it is internal transformation driven by Scripture dwelling richly within the believer.

II. “Let the Word of Christ” — The Source of Transformation

A. The Phrase “Word of Christ”

• Refers to the message about Christ (the gospel) and the words spoken by Christ (His teachings).
• Christ is both the content and the speaker of the Word.

B. The Greek Term logos Christou

• Logos = message, revelation, authoritative word.
• This is not human wisdom; it is divine revelation centered on Jesus.

C. Theological Insight

• The Word of Christ is the final authority for the believer’s life (cf. Hebrews 1:1–2).
• It is the Word that creates faith (Romans 10:17), sanctifies (John 17:17), and sustains the soul.

D. OT Connection

• Psalm 19:7 — “The law of Yahweh is perfect, restoring the soul.”
• God’s Word has always been the source of spiritual renewal.

III. “Dwell in You Richly” — The Indwelling Word

A. The Greek Verb enoikeō — “to dwell, to live in, to inhabit”

• Not a visitor, not a guest — but a resident.
• The Word is meant to take up residence in the believer’s inner life.

B. “Richly” — plousiōs (abundantly, extravagantly, overflowing)

• Not sparsely, not occasionally, not minimally.
• The Word must fill the believer’s mind, affections, and will.

C. The Word Within Produces:

• Direction — shaping decisions.
• Conviction — exposing sin.
• Comfort — strengthening the heart.
• Wisdom — guiding relationships.
• Worship — fueling praise.

D. NT Connection

• John 15:7 — “If My words abide in you…”
• The abiding Word is the secret to answered prayer and fruitful living.

E. OT Connection

• Psalm 119:11 — “Your word I have treasured in my heart…”
• Internalization is the ancient path of holiness.

IV. “With All Wisdom” — The Word Produces Skillful Living

A. The Greek Term sophia — “skill, discernment, practical wisdom”

• Wisdom is not merely knowledge; it is skill in godly living.
• The Word within produces wisdom for:
  • Relationships
  • Decisions
  • Temptations
  • Suffering
  • Ministry

B. NT Connection

• James 3:17 — Wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy.
• The Word forms this wisdom in the believer.

C. OT Connection

• Proverbs 2:6 — “Yahweh gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and discernment.”
• Wisdom flows from God’s mouth — His Word.

V. “Teaching and Admonishing One Another” — The Word Within Becomes the Word Among

A. Teaching — didaskontes (instructing, explaining truth)

• Believers teach one another when the Word is overflowing within them.
• Teaching is not limited to pastors; it is the ministry of every Word-filled Christian.

B. Admonishing — nouthetountes (warning, correcting, urging)

• The Word equips believers to lovingly confront sin and encourage obedience.
• A Word-filled church is a mutually discipling church.

C. The Word Within Creates a Community of Truth

• When Scripture saturates individuals, it shapes the entire congregation.
• The church becomes a place of:
  • Shared wisdom
  • Shared correction
  • Shared encouragement
  • Shared growth

D. NT Connection

• Romans 15:14 — Believers are “full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.”
• The Word equips the body to build itself up.

VI. “With Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs” — The Word Within Fuels Worship

A. Three Categories of Worship Expression

• Hymns — doctrinal songs praising God’s character and works.
• Spiritual songs — spontaneous or Spirit-led expressions of praise.

B. Worship Is the Overflow of the Word

C. Worship Is Both Vertical and Horizontal

• Vertical: directed to God.
• Horizontal: teaching and admonishing one another through song.

B. Thankfulness Is the Fruit of the Gospel

• Stored Scripture becomes instant wisdom.

D. Obey Promptly

• Obedience turns hearing into transformation.

E. Worship Biblically

• Let Scripture shape your singing.

F. Speak the Word to Others

• Encourage, teach, and admonish from Scripture.

IX. Summary: The Word Within Creates the Life Without
