Revelation 21 — The New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem

Revelation 21 reveals the final state of God’s redeemed people — the world made new and God dwelling with humanity forever.

The New Heaven and New Earth

  • John sees a new heaven and a new earth.
  • The first heaven and earth have passed away — not annihilated, but transformed.
  • The sea (symbol of chaos and separation) is no more.

The New Jerusalem — The Bride of Christ

  • The holy city descends from heaven, prepared as a bride.
  • A loud voice declares:
    • “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.”
    • “He will wipe away every tear.”
    • “Death shall be no more.”
    • “Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain.”

Key truth:
The greatest joy of eternity is God with us — forever.

God’s Final Word

  • “Behold, I am making all things new.”
  • “It is done.”
  • God is Alpha and Omega — the beginning and the end.
  • The thirsty receive the water of life freely.
  • The conquerors inherit all things.
  • The unrepentant face the second death.

The City’s Radiance

  • An angel shows John the bride — the New Jerusalem.
  • The city shines with the glory of God, like jasper, clear as crystal.
  • It has:
    • A great high wall.
    • Twelve gates (the tribes of Israel).
    • Twelve foundations (the apostles of the Lamb).
  • The city is a perfect cube — like the Holy of Holies — symbolizing God’s presence filling all.

The Materials of the City

  • Walls of jasper.
  • City of pure gold, clear as glass.
  • Foundations adorned with precious stones.
  • Gates of single pearls.
  • Streets of transparent gold.

Key truth:
The city’s beauty reflects the glory of God and the worth of His redeemed people.

No Temple — God Is the Temple

  • There is no temple in the city.
  • The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
  • No sun or moon — the glory of God is its light.
  • The nations walk by its light.
  • Its gates never shut — no night, no danger.
  • Only those written in the Lamb’s book of life enter.

Revelation 22 — The River of Life and the Final Invitation

Revelation 22 completes the vision of the new creation and closes Scripture with a final call and a final promise.

The River and the Tree of Life

  • A river of the water of life flows from the throne of God and the Lamb.
  • On either side stands the tree of life:
    • Bearing twelve kinds of fruit.
    • Yielding fruit every month.
    • Leaves for the healing of the nations.

Key truth:
Eden is restored — and surpassed — in the presence of God.

The Curse Removed

  • No more curse.
  • The throne of God and the Lamb is in the city.
  • His servants worship Him.
  • They will see His face — the ultimate blessing.
  • His name is on their foreheads.
  • No night — the Lord is their light.
  • They reign forever and ever.

The Faithful and True Words

  • The angel affirms the truth of these words.
  • Jesus says, “Behold, I am coming soon.”
  • Blessed are those who keep the words of this prophecy.

Worship God Alone

  • John falls to worship the angel.
  • The angel rebukes him: “Worship God.”

The Open Invitation

  • “Let the evildoer still do evil…” — judgment is near.
  • “Behold, I am coming soon.”
  • Jesus brings reward with Him.

The Final Gospel Call

  • “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’”
  • “Let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’”
  • “Let the thirsty come.”
  • “Let the one who desires take the water of life freely.”

Key truth:
Even at the end of Scripture, God invites sinners to come to Christ.

Warning and Promise

  • A warning not to add or take away from the prophecy.
  • Jesus’ final words:
    • “Surely I am coming soon.”
  • The church responds:
    • “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

The Final Benediction

  • “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.”
