Ephesians 3:8-9 (JDV)

Ephesians 3:8 This favor was given to me– the least of all the devotees – to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches of Christ,

Ephesians 3:9 and to shed light for all about the commission of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things.

incalculable riches of ChristThere is a particular joy that rises whenever the truth of Scripture breaks into a life marked by darkness, confusion, or deep need. It feels like placing a priceless gift into the hands of someone crushed by debt and exhausting labor—a gift that does not merely ease the burden but rescues the entire household from a future of hopeless striving. When the gospel reaches a heart in that condition, something sacred happens. Light replaces shadow, hope displaces despair, and a new story begins. Those who carry this message experience a thrill that is difficult to describe, because they witness firsthand the power of God to transform what seemed beyond repair.

Paul knew that thrill intimately. He also knew the cost. As he writes, he sits in prison, confined because he refused to stop proclaiming the message entrusted to him. His chains are the price he pays for bringing the liberating truth of Christ to those who had never heard it. Yet he does not speak of the gospel as a burden or an obligation. He calls it “the incalculable riches of Christ,” a treasure so vast that it cannot be measured, a wealth that grows as it is shared. To Paul, preaching the gospel is not a task forced upon him but a favor granted to him by God. Even in confinement, he considers himself privileged to distribute these riches.

This perspective reveals something profound about the nature of gospel ministry. The joy of seeing lives changed does not erase the suffering that often accompanies the work, but it does redefine it. Paul’s imprisonment does not diminish the value of the message; it highlights it. His willingness to endure hardship for the sake of the gospel becomes a testimony to its worth. The chains that restrict his movement cannot restrict the message. The walls that surround him cannot silence the truth he proclaims.

Paul’s joy, therefore, is not rooted in his circumstances but in the privilege of participating in God’s redemptive work. He sees himself as a steward of divine wealth, entrusted with treasures that bring freedom, reconciliation, and new life. His suffering becomes part of the story, not as a mark of defeat but as a seal of authenticity. The gospel he carries is powerful enough to provoke opposition and precious enough to endure it. And even from a prison cell, he continues to pour out the riches of Christ, confident that the light of the gospel will reach those who need it most.

Lord, thank you for enriching us with the incalculable riches of Christ. Show us how to share the wealth.
