John 14:4-7

Joh 14:4 You also know the way where I am departing for.”

Joh 14:5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re departing for. How can we know the way?”

Joh 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father if not through me.

Joh 14:7 If you have come to know me, you will come to know my Father as well. From now on you have come to know him and have seen him.”

the way to the Father now

Many read Jesus’ words here as a promise that believers will be taken to heaven immediately after death. But that is not what Jesus is promising. His focus is not on transporting souls to heaven, but on granting access to the Father—beginning now. The relationship He describes is not postponed until after death; it begins the moment a person comes to know the Son.

Jesus does promise to return and take His disciples to be where He is, but that future gathering is not a trip to heaven. It is His return to take His rightful place as King on earth. The hope He offers is not escape from the world, but the restoration of the world under His reign.

So when Jesus tells the disciples that they know (οἶδα) the way, it is because they have come to know (γινώσκω) Him. What they had not yet realized was that knowing Jesus meant knowing the Father as well. The way to the Father is not a path, a system, or a destination. The Way is a Person. And by knowing the Son, they already stood at the threshold of the Father’s presence.

This is the heart of the passage:
Access to the Father begins with knowing the Son.
Not at death.
Not at the second coming.
But now.

Thank You, Lord, for showing us the Way to the Father.
