John 14:8-10

Joh 14:8 Philip says to him, “Lord, exhibit the Father for us, and that’s enough for us.”

Joh 14:9 Jesus says to him, “Have I been among you so much time and you have not come to know me, Philip? The one who has experienced me has experienced the Father. How can you say, ‘Exhibit the Father for us ‘?

Joh 14:10 Don’t you trust that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The statements I make to you I am not speaking on my own. The Father who stays in me is doing his works.

Experiencing one through the other

This brief exchange between Jesus and Philip really does serve as a gift to the church. It clarifies not only what Jesus was doing in that moment, but what He continues to do through His people today.

Jesus bore witness to the Father—not merely by His words, but by His life. Anyone who wanted to experience the Father did not need a vision, a pilgrimage, or a mystical encounter. They simply needed to know the Son. To see Jesus was to see the Father. To listen to Jesus was to hear the Father. To walk with Jesus was to walk in the presence of the Father.

And now the pattern continues.

Those who trust in Christ are in Him, and He is in them. The life of Christ is expressed through the lives of His people. The character of Christ is displayed through their actions. The compassion of Christ is revealed through their relationships. The truth of Christ is spoken through their witness.

So anyone longing to experience Christ should be able to encounter Him through the lives of those who belong to Him. Not because believers are perfect, but because Christ is present in them. Not because they are the light, but because His light shines through them.

This is both a calling and a comfort. A calling, because the world learns what Christ is like by watching His people. A comfort, because Christ has not left the world without a visible expression of His presence.

Lord, shine through us, so people can experience You.
