Matthew 5:33-37

³³ “Another example: you have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You should not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’

³⁴ But I tell you, Do not take an oath at all, not by the sky, for it is the throne of God,

³⁵ nor by the land, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

³⁶ And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

³⁷ Let what you reply be only ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this is from the evil one. _________________________________________

Nothing but the truth

Honesty becomes one of the clearest ways to show belonging to the LORD in a world that has grown comfortable with shadows. Scripture describes believers as lights set in a darkened place, and one of the simplest yet most powerful beams of that light is truthful speech. In a culture where words are often cheap, exaggerated, or manipulated, truthfulness stands out as a mark of divine character. The world’s darkened hearts rely on oaths, dramatic promises, and elaborate guarantees because ordinary speech cannot be trusted. People feel compelled to swear by something greater than themselves to make their words believable. This reveals a deeper problem: when integrity is absent, language must be inflated to compensate.

But those who walk with the LORD are called to a different way. When a reputation for honesty is cultivated, oaths become unnecessary. A simple affirmation carries weight. A commitment is treated as sacred. High standards of truthfulness create trust, and trust becomes a testimony. Others begin to recognize that reliability is not a performance but a reflection of the One who cannot lie. In this way, honesty becomes a quiet form of witness—an everyday demonstration of the gospel’s transforming power.

Yet this calling is not easy. Life is full of pressures that tempt a person to retreat from earlier commitments. Circumstances change. Unexpected obstacles arise. A promise made in calm moments may feel burdensome when difficulties appear. The heart may want to revise, soften, or withdraw a “yes” that was spoken sincerely. Discipline is required to resist that impulse. Faithfulness in speech demands perseverance, humility, and sometimes sacrifice. It means honoring words even when doing so is inconvenient or costly. It means remembering that integrity is not measured by convenience but by consistency.

This discipline is not merely moral effort; it is spiritual formation. The LORD shapes His people into trustworthy individuals because trustworthiness reflects His own nature. Every kept promise becomes a small echo of His covenant faithfulness. Every truthful word becomes a reminder that He is the God whose promises never fail. As believers grow in honesty, they participate in His character and display His light more clearly in a world that desperately needs it.

LORD, make us people whose words carry weight, whose commitments endure, and whose integrity reflects Your faithfulness.
