Revelation 1
The Revelation and Its Blessing
- This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, given by God, shown to John through an angel.
- John writes to the seven churches in Asia.
- A blessing is promised to:
- The one who reads the words aloud.
- Those who hear.
- Those who keep what is written.
Greeting from the Triune God
- From Him who is and who was and who is to come (the Father).
- From the seven spirits before His throne (the fullness of the Spirit).
- From Jesus Christ:
- The faithful witness.
- The firstborn from the dead.
- The ruler of the kings of the earth.
- Jesus loves us, freed us from our sins by His blood, and made us a kingdom of priests.
The Coming King
- “Behold, He is coming with the clouds.”
- Every eye will see Him — even those who pierced Him.
- All tribes will wail on account of Him.
John’s Vision of the Risen Christ
- John is on Patmos “because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”
- He is in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day.
- He hears a loud voice like a trumpet commanding him to write to the seven churches.
The Son of Man Among the Lampstands
John turns and sees:
- Seven golden lampstands — the seven churches.
- One like a Son of Man:
- Clothed in a long robe.
- Golden sash around His chest.
- Hair white like wool.
- Eyes like blazing fire.
- Feet like burnished bronze.
- Voice like many waters.
- Seven stars in His right hand.
- Sharp two‑edged sword from His mouth.
- Face shining like the sun.
John falls at His feet as though dead.
Christ’s Comfort and Authority
Jesus lays His right hand on him:
- “Fear not.”
- “I am the First and the Last.”
- “I am the Living One.”
- “I died, and behold I am alive forevermore.”
- He holds the keys of Death and Hades.
He explains:
- The stars are the angels of the churches.
- The lampstands are the churches themselves.
Revelation 2
Revelation 2 contains Christ’s messages to the first four churches. Each follows a pattern:
- Christ reveals Himself.
- He knows their works.
- He commends or rebukes.
- He calls them to repent or persevere.
- He promises reward to the one who conquers.
Ephesus — Orthodoxy Without Love
Commendation
- Hard work.
- Patient endurance.
- Refusal to tolerate evil.
- Discernment against false apostles.
Rebuke
- They have abandoned their first love.
Call
- Remember.
- Repent.
- Do the works they did at first.
Warning
- Christ will remove their lampstand if they do not repent.
Promise
- The conqueror will eat from the tree of life in God’s paradise.
Smyrna — Faithful in Suffering
Commendation
- Christ knows their tribulation and poverty — yet they are rich.
- He knows the slander they endure.
Call
- “Do not fear what you are about to suffer.”
- Be faithful unto death.
Promise
- The crown of life.
- The second death will not harm them.
Pergamum — Faithful Yet Compromised
Commendation
- They hold fast Christ’s name.
- They did not deny the faith even where Satan’s throne is.
Rebuke
- Some hold to false teaching (Balaam, Nicolaitans).
- Moral and doctrinal compromise.
Call
- Repent.
Warning
- Christ will fight against the false teachers with the sword of His mouth.
Promise
- Hidden manna.
- A white stone with a new name known only to the one who receives it.
Thyatira — Love and Service, but Tolerating Evil
Commendation
- Love.
- Faith.
- Service.
- Patient endurance.
- Their latter works exceed the first.
Rebuke
- They tolerate “Jezebel,” a false prophetess leading believers into immorality and idolatry.
Call
- Hold fast what they have until Christ comes.
Warning
- Severe judgment on Jezebel and her followers.
Promise
- Authority over the nations.
- The morning star — Christ Himself.
Revelation 1–2 in One Sentence
John sees the risen, reigning Christ walking among His churches, speaking words of comfort, correction, warning, and promise, calling His people to love, purity, perseverance, and faithful endurance until He comes.
Devotions
