The Threefold Witness
- Jesus came “by water and blood” — His baptism and His sacrificial death.

- Spirit, water, and blood agree in their testimony.
- God Himself bears witness about His Son.
- To reject this testimony is to make God a liar.
Eternal Life in the Son
- God has given believers eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
- “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son does not have life.”
- John writes so believers may know they have eternal life — assurance, not uncertainty.
Confidence in Prayer

- John ends abruptly but powerfully:
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
Anything that replaces Christ is an idol.
2 John
Truth and Love
- John writes to “the elect lady and her children” — likely a local church.
- He rejoices that some of her children walk in the truth.
- He reminds them of the commandment they have had from the beginning: love one another.
- Love is defined as walking according to God’s commandments.
- Truth and love are inseparable — truth without love is harsh; love without truth is hollow.
Warning Against Deceivers
- Many deceivers have gone out into the world.
- The defining mark of a deceiver: denying that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
- Such a person is “the deceiver and the antichrist.”
- Believers must guard what they have worked for so they do not lose their reward.
Do Not Support False Teachers
- Anyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God.
- Those who abide in the teaching have both the Father and the Son.
- John instructs the church not to receive or support false teachers:
- Hospitality in the early church implied endorsement.
- Supporting false teachers spreads their error.
Joy and Personal Fellowship
- John hopes to visit them soon and speak face to face.
- He ends with greetings from “the children of your elect sister” — another church.
