1 John 1

The Word of Life Manifested

• John begins with eyewitness testimony:
  • They heard, saw, and touched the eternal Word.
  • Jesus is the life made manifest.
• The purpose of this proclamation:
  • Fellowship with the apostles.
  • Fellowship with the Father and the Son.
  • Fullness of joy.

Walking in the Light

• God is light; in Him is no darkness at all.
• Fellowship with God requires walking in the light — honesty, purity, truth.
• Walking in the light does not mean sinlessness:
  • It means refusing to hide sin.
  • It means living openly before God.

Confession and Cleansing

• If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves.
• If we confess our sins:
  • God is faithful and just.
  • He forgives.
  • He cleanses from all unrighteousness.
• Denying sin makes God a liar and shows His word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

• John writes so believers will not sin — but if they do:
  • Jesus Christ the righteous is our Advocate with the Father.
  • He is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for our sins.
  • His work extends to the whole world.

Obedience as Evidence

• Knowing God is shown by keeping His commandments.
• Whoever says “I know Him” but does not obey is lying.
• Obedience brings assurance: God’s love is perfected in us.
• Walking as Jesus walked is the pattern of true discipleship.

The Old and New Commandment

• The command to love is both old (from the beginning) and new (renewed in Christ).
• Hatred toward a brother reveals darkness.
• Love reveals light and removes stumbling.

Stages of Spiritual Growth

John addresses:

• Children — forgiven and knowing the Father.
• Young men — strong, overcoming the evil one.
• Fathers — knowing Him who is from the beginning.

Do Not Love the World

• The world’s desires:
  • Lust of the flesh
  • Lust of the eyes
  • Pride of life
• These are passing away.
• Those who do God’s will abide forever.

Antichrists and Remaining in the Truth

• Many antichrists have come — those who deny the Son.
• Their departure from the church reveals they never truly belonged.
• Believers have an anointing from the Holy One — the Spirit who teaches and guards them.
• Remaining in what they heard from the beginning keeps them in fellowship with the Son and the Father.
• God promises eternal life.

Abiding Until Christ Appears

• Believers must abide in Christ so they will have confidence at His coming.
• Righteous living reveals those born of Him.
