James 4 — Worldliness, Humility, and the Will of God
1. The Source of Conflict: Desires at War Within (4:1–3)
James exposes the root of quarrels:
- Passions battling inside.

External conflict is born from internal disorder.
2. Friendship With the World Is Enmity With God (4:4–5)

4. Do Not Judge Your Brother (4:11–12)
- Speaking evil of a brother is speaking evil of the law.
- There is only one Lawgiver and Judge.

5. Do Not Boast About Tomorrow (4:13–17)
- Life is a mist.
- Plans must be submitted to God’s will: “If the Lord wills…”
- Knowing the right thing and failing to do it is sin.

James 5 — Wealth, Patience, Prayer, and Restoration
1. A Warning to the Rich Oppressors (5:1–6)
James speaks prophetically to unjust wealthy landowners.
Their Sins
- Hoarding wealth.
- Exploiting workers.
- Living in luxury and self‑indulgence.
- Condemning the righteous.
Their Judgment
- Misery is coming.
- Their riches will testify against them.
Teaching emphasis:
Wealth is not condemned — but using it unjustly invites God’s judgment.
2. Patience Until the Lord’s Coming (5:7–11)
- Be patient like a farmer waiting for rain.
- Establish your hearts — the Lord is near.
- Do not grumble against one another.
- Consider the prophets and Job as examples of endurance.
Teaching emphasis:
Suffering is temporary; the Lord’s return is certain.
3. Speak With Integrity (5:12)
- Do not swear by heaven or earth.
- Let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no.
Teaching emphasis:
Integrity makes oaths unnecessary.
4. Prayer in Every Circumstance (5:13–18)
A rich theology of prayer.
When suffering — pray.
When cheerful — sing praise.
When sick — call the elders to pray and anoint with oil.
When sinning — confess to one another and pray for healing.
Elijah as an Example
- A man with a nature like ours.
- His prayers stopped the rain — and started it again.

Prayer is powerful because God is powerful.
5. Restoring the Wandering Brother (5:19–20)
- Turning a sinner back from wandering saves his soul from death.
- It covers a multitude of sins.

The church is responsible for lovingly pursuing the straying.
