John 16:8-11
Joh 16:8 When he comes, he will expose the world in connection with sin, righteousness, and judgment:
Joh 16:9 In connection with sin, because they do not trust me;
Joh 16:10 in connection with righteousness, because I am leaving for the Father and you will no longer see me;
Joh 16:11 and in connection with judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
Exposed
The Holy Spirit continues to unveil the deepest realities of the gospel in the present age, and each of these realities exposes something monumental about the world, about Christ, and about the unseen realm.
The greatest sin ever committed is being exposed by the Spirit even now. That sin is not merely moral failure, cruelty, or injustice—though these are grievous. The Spirit identifies something deeper: the refusal to trust in Jesus. When the world rejected Christ, it rejected the One sent by the Father, the only source of life. Unbelief is not simply an intellectual hesitation; it is a spiritual rebellion. The Spirit shines light on this truth, revealing that the root of all other sins is the refusal to believe in the Son whom God has given.
The greatest righteousness ever displayed is also being exposed by the Spirit today. This righteousness is not human virtue or religious achievement. It is the perfect relationship between the Father and the Son—a relationship marked by obedience, love, unity, and delight. Jesus embodied that righteousness in every word, every action, every intention. When He returned to the Father, the Spirit took up the role of reminding the world of that righteousness. In the absence of Christ’s physical presence, the Spirit testifies to the purity, beauty, and perfection of the Son’s life and mission. The Spirit keeps before the world the standard of true righteousness: the life of Jesus Himself.
The greatest judgment ever rendered is likewise being exposed by the Spirit. This judgment is not the final day of reckoning but a present reality. The ruler of this world—Satan—has already been condemned. His rebellion has been exposed, his authority broken, and his destiny sealed. The Spirit reveals that the decisive judgment has already taken place at the cross. The world may still feel the tremors of Satan’s influence, but the verdict has been issued. The kingdom of darkness stands defeated.
In all these ways, the Spirit floods the world with light—revealing the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment. This light exposes the lies that once held humanity captive and illuminates the path of life found in Christ.
Lord, thank you for the light the Holy Spirit has poured into our lives—revealing your truth and exposing the lies of the evil one.
