end of a conspiracy

devotions from Jefferson Vann # 2355

Numbers 31:1-12

Num 31:1 Yahveh spoke to Moses, and this is what he said,
Num 31:2 “Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you will be gathered to your people.”
Num 31:3 So Moses spoke to the people, and this is what he said “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute Yahveh’s vengeance on Midian.
Num 31:4 You will send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war.”
Num 31:5 So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
Num 31:6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the signal trumpets in his hand.
Num 31:7 They warred against Midian, as Yahveh commanded Moses, and killed every male.
Num 31:8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. And they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.
Num 31:9 And the people of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones, and they took as plunder all their animals, their flocks, and all their goods.
Num 31:10 All their cities in the places where they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire,
Num 31:11 and took all the spoil and all the plunder, both of human and of animal.
Num 31:12 Then they brought the captives and the plunder and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the people of Israel, at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

end of a conspiracy

Did you notice who is listed as one of the casualties in Israel’s war against the Moab Midianites? It’s our old “friend” Balaam. He would not curse the Israelites, because he knew those words would prove to be a contradiction. But he made his choice about who he would support. He conspired with the Midianites to make the Israelites leave the pure worship of Yahveh. For that conspiracy, he met his end along with them.

There are actually plenty of Balaams today. There are those who would never say a word against Christianity, but who have chosen to live their lives as unbelievers. Oh LORD, if we could only show them that their end will be the same as those they have chosen to support!

LORD, show us how to seek those who are friendly to us, but have not come to put their faith in You.
