Teaching Outline: Wake Up to the Hour

Scripture: Romans 13:11 (Legacy Standard Bible)

Scripture Reading (LSB)

Romans 13:11

“Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.”

Context & Background

  • Historical Context: In Romans 12–13, Paul transitions from deep doctrinal truths (chapters 1–11) to practical Christian living. After detailing how believers should love one another, submit to authority, and fulfill the law through love (vv. 1–10), Paul turns to an urgent eschatological call.
  • The Metaphor: Paul uses time (kairos), sleep, and waking up to stir believers out of spiritual lethargy and complacency.
  • Main Idea: Because believers live in the light of Christ’s imminent return, we must snap out of spiritual slumber and live with urgent, purposeful readiness.

I. Spiritual Discernment: “Knowing the Time”

“Do this, knowing the time…”

1. Understanding the Epoch (Kairos)

  • Strategic Time: Paul uses kairos rather than chronos (clock time)—referring to a crucial, decisive season or window of opportunity in God’s redemptive plan.
  • Living Between the Ages: Believers live between the inauguration of Christ’s kingdom (His first coming) and its final consummation (His second coming).

2. The Danger of Spiritual Blindness

  • To live without “knowing the time” is to drift through life oblivious to eternal realities, absorbed by worldly distractions and temporal pursuits.

II. The Urgent Command: “Awaken from Sleep”

“…that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep…”

1. Defining Spiritual Sleep

  • Lethargy and Apathy: Spiritual sleep is a state of moral insensitivity, prayerlessness, passivity, and compromise with the world (cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:6–8; Ephesians 5:14).
  • The Deception of Comfort: Sleep feels comfortable and safe, but spiritually, it leaves believers vulnerable to temptation and unproductive for the Kingdom.

2. The Immediate Call to Action

  • “Already the hour”: Paul leaves no room for procrastination. The wake-up call is not for tomorrow; it is an urgent imperative for now.
  • Awakening means shaking off spiritual sluggishness, re-engaging in active obedience, and putting on the armor of light (vv. 12–14).

III. The Ultimate Motivation: “Salvation Is Nearer”

“…for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.”

1. Final Redemption Is Approaching

  • Fullness of Salvation: While believers are currently justified and saved from the penalty of sin, Paul here refers to the final stage of salvation—our glorification and the complete deliverance from sin at Christ’s return (cf. Romans 8:23).
  • Every passing day brings us one step closer to seeing our Lord face-to-face.
  1. Eschatological Hope as an Engine for Holiness
  • The brevity of this present age and the proximity of eternity should not lead to panic, but to joyful expectancy and urgent, holy living.

Application & Discussion Questions

Application Points

  1. Take an Alarm-Clock Inventory: Are there areas of your life (prayer, Scripture reading, witness, purity) where you have drifted into “spiritual sleep”?
  2. Re-align Your Priorities: Live with an eternity-focused mindset—evaluating daily choices, time management, and energy in light of Christ’s return.
  3. Put On the Armor of Light: Respond to waking up by taking concrete steps toward personal holiness and active ministry in your church and community (vv. 12–14).

Discussion / Reflection

  • What are some subtle signs that a Christian or a church community is falling into “spiritual sleep”?
  • How does keeping the return of Christ in mind alter the way we handle daily temptations, anxieties, and priorities?
