glory in the future
1 Peter 1:10-12
1 Peter 1:10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who prophesied about the grace that would come to you, searched and carefully investigated.
1 Peter 1:11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Breath of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Sacred Breath sent from heaven — angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.
glory in the future
Peter draws a straight line from the experience of Christ to the experience of Christ’s people. The prophets who spoke beforehand about the Messiah did not only predict His suffering and His glory; they also established the pattern by which God brings His purposes to completion. The path of the Servant—first suffering, then glory—becomes the path of all who belong to Him. What was true of the Head will be true of the body. What was accomplished in Christ will be reproduced in His followers at the appointed time.
The prophets saw this pattern from a distance. They spoke of a figure who would be rejected, pierced, and crushed, yet afterward exalted, vindicated, and enthroned. They searched and inquired, longing to understand the timing and circumstances of these events. Their prophecies were not isolated predictions but part of a unified testimony pointing toward the saving work of Christ. When Jesus suffered and was raised, their words found their fulfillment. But Peter insists that their testimony does not end with Christ alone. It extends to all who share His life.
Believers today stand within that same prophetic storyline. Present suffering is not a sign of divine neglect but participation in the pattern God has already revealed. The hardships, pressures, and trials that mark the Christian life are not random disruptions. They are the continuation of the Messiah’s own path. Just as Christ endured suffering before entering glory, so His people endure suffering now with the assurance that glory awaits them. The prophets who foresaw Christ’s journey also foresaw the inheritance of those who would follow Him.
This inheritance is not abstract or symbolic. It is the future reality of resurrection life, the restoration of all things, and the sharing of Christ’s glory in the age to come. The prophets testified to a salvation that would reach its fullness only after suffering had done its refining work. Peter takes that testimony and applies it directly to the scattered believers of his day—and to all believers across time. The present moment may be marked by difficulty, but the future is shaped by the same divine pattern that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in glory.
Thus the prophetic witness becomes a source of endurance. It assures believers that their suffering is neither wasted nor final. The glory revealed in Christ will be revealed in them as well, completing the story the prophets began to tell.
LORD, help us to persevere through the times of testing so that the glory that is our living hope shines through.
