because God

Hebrews 13:1-5 (JDV)

Hebrews 13:1 Let sibling love stay.
Hebrews 13:2 Don’t neglect to show hospitality, because by doing this some have welcomed agents as guests without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:3 Remember those in prison, as though you were in prison with them, and the mistreated, as though you yourselves were suffering bodily.
Hebrews 13:4 The wedding is to be honored by all and the bed kept undefiled because God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.
Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from greed. Be satisfied with the things you presently have, because he himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you.

because God

The cluster of imperatives in Hebrews 13 can feel scattered—love one another, honor marriage, reject greed, welcome strangers, remember leaders, offer praise, do good. But the writer is not simply piling up moral commands. He is grounding every one of them in the character of God Himself. The reason believers live differently is not because they have signed a contract to obey a list of rules. Their obedience flows from the reality of who God is and what God does.

Two truths anchor the entire section.

First, God will judge those who transgress. Hebrews has already warned that God is a consuming fire, and that those who reject His voice have no refuge. This sober reality gives weight to the ethical commands. Sin is not trivial. Disobedience is not a private matter. God sees, God evaluates, and God holds His people accountable. The imperatives are not arbitrary; they reflect the holiness of the One who calls His people to Himself.

Second, God promises never to leave or abandon His people. This assurance transforms the commands from burdens into invitations. Believers are not left to obey in their own strength. They are upheld by the presence of a faithful God who walks with them. The promise of His nearness becomes the foundation for contentment, courage, purity, and love. The God who judges is also the God who sustains.

This combination—God’s holiness and God’s nearness—explains why Christian ethics are never merely transactional. Believers do not live the way they do in order to earn favor or secure blessing. They live this way because God is real. Their actions become visible demonstrations of His reality. When they love sacrificially, they reveal His love. When they honor marriage, they reflect His faithfulness. When they reject greed, they display His sufficiency. When they endure hardship, they testify to His presence.

The imperatives of Hebrews 13 are therefore not random at all. They are expressions of a life shaped by the character of God. They call believers to embody the truth they confess, to let their conduct become a living witness that the God who judges and the God who stays is the God who defines their lives.
