her only hope

Joshua 2:8-14 (JDV)

Joshua 2:8 Before the men fell asleep, she went up on the roof
Joshua 2:9 and said to them, “I know that Yahveh has given you this land and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you.
Joshua 2:10 You see, we have heard how Yahveh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings you completely destroyed across the Jordan.
Joshua 2:11 When we heard this, our heart melted, and everyone’s breath continually failed because of you, because Yahveh your God is God in the sky above and on land below.
Joshua 2:12 Now please swear to me by Yahveh that you will also show kindness to my father’s family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign
Joshua 2:13 that you will spare the lives of my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all who belong to them, and save us from death.”
Joshua 2:14 The men answered her, “We will give our lives for yours. If you don’t report our mission, we will show kindness and faithfulness to you when Yahveh gives us the land.

her only hope

Rahab knew that the Israelites were an unstoppable force, and she knew why. She told the scouts “because Yahveh your God is God in the sky above and on land below.” She knew her family’s only hope of rescue was joining with them.

My friend, if you are still considering your options when it comes to religion, listen to Rahab. She had no personal experience with God other than the stories of his impact. It is probable that the two scouts she protected were the only Israelites she knew. But she reasoned correctly that her only hope was to become one of God’s people.

Lord, draw to yourself the Rahabs of this generation. Show us how to make such an impact that people seek to join your congregation because of what you do among us.
