Ephesians 4:7-10 (JDV)

Ephesians 4:7 Now favor was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Ephesians 4:8 For this reason it says: When he ascended on high, he took the captives captive; he gave gifts to humans.

Ephesians 4:9 But what does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower parts of the land?

Ephesians 4:10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the skies, to fill all things.

he also descendedThe ascension of Christ is best understood as a homecoming. It was not a promotion, nor an escape, nor the beginning of something new for Him. It was His return to the glory that had always been His. Long before Bethlehem, the Son shared eternal fellowship with the Father. His descent into the world—His incarnation—was the extraordinary act. Only He could step down from heaven without ceasing to be divine, and only He could return to heaven because it was His rightful dwelling. The One who descended is the same One who ascended far above all the heavens, and no one else has ever been qualified to make that journey in both directions.

Because of this, salvation is not a shared project between humanity and God. It is Christ’s gift alone. Only He possessed the worth, purity, and authority to purchase redemption. The price required was beyond human reach, yet fully within His. His enthronement after the resurrection was not a reward for suffering but the restoration of His rightful place. The throne belonged to Him before the world began, and it belongs to Him now.

What makes this even more astonishing is that His descent was voluntary. He chose to enter the world, to take on flesh, to walk among those who would misunderstand Him, oppose Him, and ultimately crucify Him. That choice opened the door to eternal life for all who believe. The incarnation was the beginning of a rescue mission, and the cross was its decisive moment. His obedience carried Him all the way to death, not because death had any claim on Him, but because only His death could reconcile humanity to the Father.

The sacrifice succeeded. The resurrection is the proof. Because His offering was accepted, the barrier between God and humanity has been removed. The hostility has been killed. The debt has been paid. The way has been opened.

As a result, believers now walk in a freedom that is not self-made and in a power that is not self-generated. The same Christ who descended and ascended now empowers His people through the Spirit. Freedom from condemnation and empowerment for holy living flow from the same source: the finished work of the One who came down to save and returned to reign. His victory becomes the ground on which redeemed lives are built, and His enthronement guarantees the life He gives will endure forever.

He paid the price – we get the gifts.
