Ephesians 1:13-14 (JDV)
Ephesians 1:13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Sacred Breath1 when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your rescue,2 and when you believed
Ephesians 1:14 who3 is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the acquisition,4 to the praise of his glory.
down paymentPaul describes the gift of the Holy Spirit with an image that is both pastoral and theologically rich: the Spirit is a down payment, the first installment of the inheritance God has promised. In the ancient world, a down payment was not symbolic. It was a binding pledge that guaranteed the full amount would follow. By using this language, Paul emphasizes that God has already begun the work of redemption in believers, and that the presence of the Spirit is the unmistakable sign that the rest of the promise will certainly come.
The Spirit functions as a seal, marking believers as God’s own possession. This seal is not a passive stamp but the active, creative power of God Himself. The same divine Breath that animated creation and raised Jesus from the dead now dwells within the people of God. His presence identifies them, protects them, and preserves them until the day when the full inheritance arrives. Paul calls that future moment “the acquisition,” the day when God completes the redemption of His people at the resurrection.
Yet Paul is careful to distinguish between the Spirit’s present work and the final transformation still to come. The Spirit’s arrival does not grant immortality. Believers do not yet possess resurrected bodies, nor have they entered the fullness of the age to come. What they receive instead is power—the very power that raised Christ from the dead. This power strengthens faith, produces holiness, and sustains hope. It is not the final rescue, but it is the unmistakable evidence that the final rescue is on the way.
The Spirit’s presence is therefore both assurance and anticipation. Assurance, because God has already acted decisively by giving His own Spirit as a pledge. Anticipation, because the Spirit’s work points forward to a future that has not yet arrived. Every moment of conviction, every act of obedience, every stirring of hope is a reminder that God has begun something in His people that He fully intends to finish.
Paul’s imagery invites believers to live in this tension with confidence. The Spirit within is the guarantee that the story is moving toward resurrection, renewal, and the full inheritance God has promised. The down payment has been made, the seal has been set, and the future is secure.
Thank you Lord, for your empowerment today, and your promise for a future which will glorify you.
