Ephesians 1:1-2 (JDV)
Ephesians 1:1 Paul, a missionary1 of Christ Jesus by God’s preference:2 To the faithful devotees3 in Christ Jesus at Ephesus.
Ephesians 1:2 Favor4 to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
preference and favor
Paul emphasizes God’s sovereignty in this salutation. What mattered the most is not what Paul wanted, nor what the Ephesian Christians wanted, but what God preferred – who he chooses to favor. This notion underscores the idea that our lives are intricately woven into a divine plan that far surpasses our individual desires.
In our contemporary society, there is a strong emphasis on personal autonomy and self-determination. We are often encouraged to pursue our own ambitions relentlessly, and to forge paths that resonate with our own interests and dreams. This mindset cultivates a sense of independence but can also lead to a disconnect from greater spiritual truths and communal responsibilities.
We could choose to live our lives like that – living them to suit ourselves. However, this often results in fleeting satisfaction and a pursuit that lacks fulfillment beyond the immediate. The constant chase for individual wants can leave a void that only the divine can fill. Alternatively, we could choose God’s favor and peace, an option that invites us into a deeper relationship with the Creator, aligning our lives with His purposes and plans.
That kind of life comes from yielding to God’s preference. By making this choice, we find ourselves in a position of blessing, fully aware that God’s plans for us are good, as Scriptures teach us. Yielding to God’s preferences does not mean abandoning our dreams; rather, it invites us to reshape them under His guidance. The resulting peace brings a clarity that enables us to navigate life’s complexities with confidence. In this alignment, we discover a profound sense of purpose that transcends our superficial desires, carving out a life imbued with meaning and rich in divine favor.
Lord, teach us to know and yield to your preference.
