Psalm 32:10-11

Psalm 32:10 Many times of anguish1 will come to the wicked, but the one who trusts in Yahveh has covenant faithfulness surrounding him.

Psalm 32:11 Be happy in Yahveh and celebrate, you righteous ones; give a ringing cry, all you upright in heart.

the shield of covenant faithfulness

This is not exactly a guarantee that as believers we will never experience times of anguish. Instead, the psalmist is saying that the ones trusting in God and following his road will have a special shield surrounding them. That shield is God’s covenant faithfulness. Those outside the covenant will not experience the protection. Of all the things people might do to protect themselves, this one is the most urgent.

Lord, surround us with your shield.
