2:1a Why are the nations so angry?

Psalm 2 opens with a penetrating question: “Why do the nations rage and the peoples meditate on a vain thing?” The psalmist looks across the world and observes humanity’s collective resistance to God’s authority. From heaven’s perspective, this rebellion is both tragic and irrational. God created every nation, established the boundaries of their existence, and designed humanity to flourish under His righteous rule. Yet instead of seeking their Creator, entire societies often devote their energy to escaping His authority. The psalm exposes the futility of this effort. No nation can ultimately prosper apart from the God who gives life, wisdom, and moral order. At the center of God’s plan stands His Anointed One, the Messiah, through whom broken humanity is reconciled to its Creator.
