enhancing God’s reputation
Devotions from Jefferson Vann # 2418
John 7:15-18
Joh 7:15 Then the Jews were amazed and said, “How can this man know so many writings, since he hasn’t been trained?”
Joh 7:16 Jesus answered them, “My teaching isn’t mine but is from the one who sent me.
Joh 7:17 If someone wants to do what he wants, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from myself.
Joh 7:18 The one who speaks from himself seeks to enhance his own reputation; but the one who seeks to enhance the reputation of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
enhancing God’s reputation
A life shaped around enhancing the reputation of God begins with a clear recognition of where true spiritual authority comes from. Jesus spoke the Father’s words because He came from the Father. No one else enters the world that way. For ordinary disciples, the only path to speaking God’s truth with clarity is immersion in the Scriptures. There is no alternate route, no spiritual shortcut, no effortless download of divine insight. The sacred writings must be entered, absorbed, wrestled with, prayed over, and allowed to reshape the inner life. Only then does a person begin to speak with a voice that reflects God’s wisdom rather than personal opinion.
This kind of formation is not abstract. It prepares a believer for real encounters with real people. When the Samaritan woman met Jesus at the well, He spoke into her life with a depth that came from perfect communion with the Father. When Nicodemus approached Him in the night, Jesus guided him into the mystery of new birth because He understood the Scriptures and the Spirit’s work from the inside out. Those encounters were not accidents; they were the fruit of a life rooted in God’s truth.
For anyone seeking to enhance God’s reputation, the pattern remains the same. Immersion in Scripture becomes the well from which living water flows. The Spirit uses that water to cleanse motives, sharpen discernment, and cultivate compassion. Then, when a weary soul appears—someone carrying shame, confusion, or spiritual hunger—the heart is ready. The words offered are not clever arguments or borrowed phrases but truth shaped by Scripture and softened by grace. One life touches another, and God’s reputation is lifted.
This is how the kingdom advances: not through grand displays but through faithful people who have allowed God’s word to saturate them. Each conversation, each act of kindness, each moment of witness becomes a small but real testimony to the character of God. One soul at a time, His name is honored.
LORD, glorify yourself through lives shaped by your word and empowered by your Spirit.
