John’s hour

Devotions from Jefferson Vann # 2399

John 5:31-35

Joh 5:31 “If I were to testify about myself, my testimony is not true.
Joh 5:32 Another one is the testifyer about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.
Joh 5:33 You sent inquirers to John, and he has testified to the truth.
Joh 5:34 I don’t welcome human testimony, but I speak of these things so that you may be saved.
Joh 5:35 John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for an hour in his light.

John’s hour

A few years ago, the world said goodbye to evangelist Billy Graham, a man whose influence reached far beyond the borders of any one nation. His impact rested not on complexity or novelty but on the simplicity and clarity of his gospel message. That simplicity carried weight. It cut through noise, reached hearts, and reminded countless people that God’s invitation is both profound and accessible. His ministry shaped many lives, including mine, because it demonstrated what God can do through a person wholly committed to proclaiming Christ.

John the Baptist stood in a similar role in his own generation. He was the world‑shaping evangelist of his day, a man whose entire life was oriented toward one purpose: bringing people back to God. He lived simply, preached boldly, and refused to soften the truth. Crowds came to him in the wilderness, drawn by the authenticity of his message and the urgency of his call to repentance. Yet John never allowed the attention to settle on himself. When Jesus appeared, John immediately identified Him as the Lamb of God, the One who would take away the sin of the world. His ministry reached its highest point not when crowds gathered around him, but when he pointed those crowds toward Christ.

Jesus later spoke of John’s “hour”—a limited window of time in which John was called to shine. His ministry was brief, intense, and purposeful. He did not live to see the full unfolding of Jesus’ work, yet he fulfilled the mission entrusted to him. His hour was not measured by length but by faithfulness. And in that hour, he shone with remarkable brightness.

Reflecting on John’s life brings a sobering and encouraging truth: every person is given an hour. Not a literal sixty minutes, but a span of time—however long or short—in which God invites a life to bear witness to His light. John’s hour came and went, but its radiance continues to illuminate the story of redemption. The same God who used John in his moment calls believers in every generation to shine in theirs.

LORD, show us how to shine brightly during our hour, that the light entrusted to us may point others toward the Lamb of God.
