Numbers 25:16-18

Num 25:16 And Yahveh spoke to Moses, and this is what he said
Num 25:17 “Attack the Midianites and strike them down,
Num 25:18 because they attacked you treacherously when they deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.”

the attack at Peor

What was the treacherous attack at Peor? Verse 2 says that (the Moabite) women invited (the Israelite men) to the sacrifices of their gods, and the men ate and … bowed down in worship to their (Moabite) gods. All it took was an invitation, and the Israelites could not resist breaking their covenant with Yahveh.

The lesson for Christians is to stay true to Jesus, and to be aware that non Christian friends may be unwitting weapons attacking you with an “invitation.”

LORD, give us discernment and a passionate loyalty to Jesus.
