Luke 21:34-36

Luk 21:34 “But pay attention to yourselves or else your hearts might be weighed down with intoxication and drunkenness and worries belonging to this life, and that day spring on you suddenly like a trap.
Luk 21:35 Because it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole land.
Luk 21:36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand tall in the presence of the Son of Man.”

staying awake and standing tall

Some believers today have concluded that the signs of the second coming don’t really matter—that the healthiest approach is to ignore them, avoid thinking about the nearness of Christ’s return, and simply get on with life. But Jesus never gives us that option. He didn’t give signs to entertain the curious or to fuel speculation. He gave signs to keep His people awake.

The signs are His gracious reminders that this age is temporary, that the world is not drifting aimlessly, and that His return is drawing nearer with every passing day. They are meant to pull us away from self‑indulgence, to loosen our grip on earthly anxieties, and to keep our hearts alert. Jesus knows how easily we drift into spiritual sleep. He knows how quickly comfort dulls our longing for His kingdom. So He tells us to watch—not fearfully, but faithfully.

He warns that the world will be caught off guard. The return of Christ will be sudden, overwhelming, and inescapable for those who have lived as though this age is all there is. But for His people, the same events that terrify the world will be a reason to stand tall. When the sky shakes and the nations tremble, believers will lift their heads because they know what is happening. They know who is coming. They know that redemption is at hand.

The signs are not meant to paralyze us. They are meant to prepare us. They are not meant to distract us from life but to anchor us in hope. They remind us that history is not spiraling out of control but moving toward the glorious return of the King. And when that day comes, those who have stayed awake—those who have lived with expectation—will greet Him with joy, not dread.

Come, LORD Jesus.
