traces of a hidden future victory

Psalm 105:23-25 (JDV)

Psalm 105:23 Then Israel went to Egypt; Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.
Psalm 105:24 Yahveh made his people very fruitful; he made them more numerous than their foes,
Psalm 105:25 whose hearts he turned to hate his people and to deal deceptively with his servants.

Kaiser reconciles this hard saying by calling it “another instance in which we will have to distinguish between the permissive will of God and his directive will concerning evil” (169). He says that this section of Psalm 105 “centers on the Lord’s control of the events of history. Even acts of enmity, and the crafty schemes of a Pharaoh bent on destroying God’s people, were under the control of Israel’s Lord” (170).

Everything God permits is part of his plan and under his control. Those things that we do not understand are not signs of God’s defeat, but traces of a hidden future victory. We have to trust God when things happen we don’t understand. They happen for a reason.

Joseph and the hidden souls

Joseph and the hidden souls

Psalm 105:16-22 (JDV)

Psalm 105:16 He called down famine against the land and destroyed the entire food supply.
Psalm 105:17 He had sent a man ahead of them – Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
Psalm 105:18 They hurt his feet with shackles; his neck was put in an iron collar.
Psalm 105:19 Until the time his prediction came true, the word of Yahveh tested him.
Psalm 105:20 The king sent for him and released him; the ruler of peoples set him free.
Psalm 105:21 He made him master of his household, ruler over all his possessions –
Psalm 105:22 binding his officials by his throat and instructing his elders.

This passage contains two instances of the Hebrew word nefesh (נֶפֶשׁ), a word which (the theologians tell us) designates the immortal part of human beings that survives their death.

You cannot find the word soul in my translation above, because I don’t think the word means that.

In verse 18, the word נֶפֶשׁ obviously means neck. You cannot put a soul in an iron collar. This rendering is also reflected in several modern versions: NLT, NIV, ESV, CSB, NET, HNV.

Several modern versions follow the KJV in treating נֶפֶשׁ as a pronoun here: NKJV, NASB20, LSB, ASV, WEB.

But the NASB20 attaches a footnote stating that the literal rendering would be “his soul came into” irons. Really? Can an immortal soul be chained with physical chains?

In verse 22, the idea is that Joseph’s throat (נֶפֶשׁ) became the binding law of the land in Egypt, so all the other leaders were bound to obey him, at Pharaoh’s orders.

Here all the modern versions abandon literalness altogether. Most follow the KJV and render נֶפֶשׁ as “pleasure” or “will” or something like that. This is the same word as that used for neck four verses above.

One of the reasons I am using my own translation in my daily devotions is that our current English translations are filled with inconsistancies like those cited above. Until the church repents of its theological heresies, those mistranslations will continue to hide the clear meaning of the original texts.

LORD, give your church the courage to repent of its unbiblical traditions.

a mere handful

a mere handful

Psalm 105:12-15 (JDV)

Psalm 105:12 When they were few people in number, very few indeed, and resident aliens in her,
Psalm 105:13 wandering from nation to nation and from one kingdom to another,
Psalm 105:14 he allowed no person to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their behalf:
Psalm 105:15 “Do not touch my anointed ones, and do not harm my prophets.”

Peterson writes “God’s people can look back to a time when, though they were a mere handful of wandering refugees, they were absolutely safe in God’s protection. We do not find our security by joining a strong and successful group, but by being servants to a strong and competent Savior. If we are “of little account” in the world’s eyes, we are “in God’s sight chosen and precious” (1 Pet. 2:4).” (122).

LORD, we trust you to protect us and to lead us to where you want us to be, and what you want us to do.

possessing the promise

possessing the promise

Psalm 105:7-11 (JDV)

Psalm 105:7 He is Yahveh our God; his judgments govern the whole land.
Psalm 105:8 He remembers his covenant permanently, the word he commanded for a thousand generations –
Psalm 105:9 the covenant he made with Abraham, swore to Isaac,
Psalm 105:10 and confirmed to Jacob as a prescription and to Israel as a permanent covenant:
Psalm 105:11 “I will give the land of Canaan to you as your hereditary possession.”

God promised these three men that they would become a nation and posses the land of Canaan. Neither of these men actually took possession of the land during their lives. But they trusted that God would do what he promised. He did.

God has promised us that the Lord Jesus Christ will return to the earth and take his throne as its king. Our lives are opportunities for us to live in faith like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob did. We have a glorious inheritance awaiting us when our king returns.

his wonderful things

his wonderful things

Psalm 105:1-6 (JDV)

Psalm 105:1 Give thanks to Yahveh, call on his name; proclaim his actions among the peoples.
Psalm 105:2 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell about all his wonderful things!
Psalm 105:3 Honor his sacred name; the hearts of those who seek Yahveh should rejoice.
Psalm 105:4 Seek Yahveh and his strength; seek his face always.
Psalm 105:5 Remember the wonderful things he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he has pronounced,
Psalm 105:6 you offspring of Abraham his servant, Jacob’s descendants – his chosen ones.

God’s wonderful things are a focus of the believer’s worship and the believer’s meditation. When we take our eyes off what God has done and is still doing, the distraction that results can be deadly. Only by focusing on him do we keep the faith necessary to overcome. Focusing on ourselves is arrogant. Focusing on the world leads to discouragement and doubt.  Only when we seek his face will we find our place.

the difference — then, the end, now

the difference — then, the end, now

Psalm 104:31-35 (JDV)

Psalm 104:31 May the fame of Yahveh endure permanently; may Yahveh rejoice in what he has made.
Psalm 104:32 He looks at the land, and it trembles; he touches the mountains, and they pour out smoke.
Psalm 104:33 I will sing to Yahveh all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live.
Psalm 104:34 May my meditation be pleasing to him; I will rejoice in Yahveh.
Psalm 104:35 May sinners be finished from the land and wicked people be no more. My throat, bless Yahveh! Praise Yah!

The LORD made a difference back then. He touched the land, and it trembled. The mountains smoked and out of them, lava poured.

The LORD will also make a difference at the end of the age. The unrepentant winners who seem to be winning now will be finished then. The wicked will be no more.

But what about now? This poet has made up his mind. He is going to spend his lifetime praising the LORD. He is going to discipline his mind to constantly meditate on things that please the LORD. Good choice.

creature dependence

creature dependence

Psalm 104:27-30 (JDV)

Psalm 104:27 They all wait for you to give them their food in its time.
Psalm 104:28 When you give it to them, they gather it; when you open your hand, they are well satisfied.
Psalm 104:29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust.
Psalm 104:30 When you send your breath, they are created, and you renew the surface of the ground.

All of us are creatures created when God breathes his breath into us, sustained by food from his hand, and we die when he takes that breath away. Our dependence on God is not a bad thing. He is faithful to his creatures.

creatures

creatures

Psalm 104:24-26 (JDV)

Psalm 104:24 How numerous are the things you have made, Yahveh! In wisdom you have made them all; the land is full of your creatures.
Psalm 104:25 This is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number – living things both large and small.
Psalm 104:26 There the ships move around, and Leviathan, which you designed for playing in it.

The land and the sea are full of them. They are creatures, designed by their creator to flourish in the environment in which he placed them. Look at the large sea creatures. They play in the ocean because that was what he designed them for.

the night shift

the night shift

Psalm 104:19-23 (JDV)

Psalm 104:19 He made the moon to mark the festivals; the sun knows when to set.
Psalm 104:20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night when all the forest animals stir.
Psalm 104:21 The young lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God.
Psalm 104:22 The sun rises; they go back and lie down in their dens.
Psalm 104:23 Adam goes out to his work and to his labor until evening.

When the sun goes down and the moon takes over the night shift, the beasts come out to seek their food. He provides for them as well. He cares about them. He has placed the day shift in Adam’s hands. He oversees the night shift himself.

homes and habitats

homes and habitats

Psalm 104:16-18 (JDV)

Psalm 104:16 The trees of Yahveh flourish, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
Psalm 104:17 There the birds make their nests; storks make their homes in the pine trees.
Psalm 104:18 The high mountains are for the wild goats; the cliffs are a refuge for dassies.

Our provider gave us a world where the wild things live — where the remote forests and mountains are treated with the same respect as we are. He provides us all with homes and habitats.
