he knows your works

SDC11467 Rev. 3.  Oh, Church of Jesus Christ. The One who saved you by his grace is very interested in the quality of your works (1,8,15). He has not found them complete (2). He sees you doing those things that enhance your reputation, but that is not what he wants. He tastes the lukewarm works, and finds them hard to swallow (15-16).  He counsels you to wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die (2).  He counsels you to buy from him the clothing, medicine and things of lasting value that will remove your shame (18). He loves you, and is pleading for you to repent and restore your relationship with him (19-20).

LORD, thank you for saving us by your grace. Now grant us the wisdom to conquer our own pride and laziness.

if the earmuffs fit…

Earmuffs-B31448_ARev. 2.  Four churches. Each is in the Roman province of Asia Minor. Each has to deal with serious problems within its fellowship. False apostles and false prophets. Spiritual fatigue. False accusations. Jesus does not promise to rescue them from their current tribulations. Instead he encourages them to remain true to him during the trials they face. The one who conquers will receive new life and new authority (7,11,17,26).

This message applied first to four churches in 1 AD, but the messenger meant it not just for them, but for anyone who has an ear (2,7,11,17,29).  If you are going through a time of trouble, check to see if the earmuffs fit.

LORD, help us to conquer the trouble we are in by staying true to the faith. Your reward is worth the trouble.

a calm and quiet soul

SDC11833 Psalm 131.  I have a busy day today. There are lots of things that I could be worrying about — lots of things that I could be occupying myself with. But here I stand. I wait on God to feed me. I trust in him. I am like a weaned child before a loving mother. Just being in God’s presence is enough.

LORD, someday you will explain all the mysteries that have puzzled me during my lifetime. Today I wait quietly, confident in you. Someday you will guide me into the greatness you intend for me. Today I wait humbly, content to take my small part in your plan. My eyes are not raised too high. They focus on you.

these who cause divisions

SDC11262 Jude 17-23.  Jude warned that Satan intends to disrupt God’s people from within. True believers must  overcome this strategy by remaining strong internally and by reacting correctly to external ungodliness.

Remaining strong = “keep yourselves in the love of God”

How? =

  • “building yourselves up in your most holy faith”
  • “praying in the Holy Spirit”
  • “waiting for the mercy of …Christ”

Reacting correctly to ungodliness =

  • “have mercy on those who doubt”
  • “snatch (others) out of the fire”
  • “to others show mercy with fear (caution).”

LORD, help us to be instruments of your peace among those who cause divisions by their ungodliness. May we keep ourselves strong, and deal wisely with those who are ruled by the flesh, and seek to cause divisions among us.

a moment of clarity

bedouin-400x300 Isaiah 38:9-20.  Hezekiah was not known for his consistency. But his illness had taken him close to death. He called it being consigned to the gates of Sheol (10). He was probably 39 when he was taken ill, and expected to die at middle age. He reflected on the fact that his tent was going to be taken from him, and he would not see the LORD in the land of the living (11-12). He pleaded with God to restore his life, and the LORD did just that.  He thanks the LORD for teaching him what is really important through the experience. He resolved that he and his children would worship the LORD all the days of their lives (19-20).

LORD, give us the wisdom to make our relationship with you a priority. May we not have to be at death’s door before we think about you.

to be like a tree

SDC11567 Job 14:7-15.  Job is depressed by the limitations of his mortal life. He imagines what it would be like if he were like a tree. Even after it is cut down, there is hope that the stump might sprout again to new life. He prays that God might hide him in Sheol (the state of death) and then remember him. He imagines God calling, and then his dead body would hear God’s voice and answer. Jesus says that Job’s wish will come true one day (John 5:28-29). We are like trees!

LORD, thank you for the hope of the resurrection.

life only in Christ

Cenetaph003 1 John 5:10-12.  It is a serious thing to reject God’s testimony about Jesus Christ. To Reject the gospel that Christians proclaim is to accuse God of lying. The Gospel can be simplified to this: God has given eternal life as an inheritance for all those who believe in his Son. Those who do not believe do not have the hope of eternal life.  Satan has convinced some that no one has this hope because there is no eternal life. He has deceived others into believing that they need not exclusively trust Jesus because everyone is eternal. Between these two lies is the truth of the Gospel. Life is only in Christ.

LORD, may we never waver from the truth of your Gospel.  May we always proclaim our hope in Christ alone.

test the spirits

20110008 1 John 4.  Jesus predicted that false prophets would predominate in this age. John said that they had already arrived and set up shop during his time. He encourages skepticism, and commands his readers to test the spirits to see if what they are saying is from God (1).  True prophets confess that Christ came from heaven and existed in the flesh (2, 14-15). They agree with the teachings of the apostles (6). They love their brothers (7-21).

LORD, help us to be discerning about whom we listen to — careful about whom we read.

true or false?

true-false 1 John 3:4-24.  By the time John wrote his letters, he had to draw a distinction between true believers and false. False prophets had begun deceiving the church, and false Christians were present in the churches. John asserted that true Christians would be the people who keep Christ’s commandments, and do what pleases him (22).  True believers do not continue to practice sin (4-5). Instead they profess belief in the name of Christ and show that faith by loving one another (24). Faith yields love which yields righteousness.

LORD, lead us to a genuine faith which rejects sin, professes your name, and pleases you by loving one another.

upside down worldviews

pottery Isaiah 29:15-16.  The people would not inquire of the LORD nor listen to his prophet. Their worldview was upside down. They were God’s creation, yet they regarded him as the thing created. Listen, secular humanists and Marxists! They were made by God’s wisdom, yet they thought they could outwit him. Listen, New Age practitioners and Animists!

LORD, help us, your people — to keep our orientation correct — to always submit to you as our creator.
