children of the day
1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 (JDV)
1 Thessalonians 5:4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, causing this day to surprise you like a thief
1 Thessalonians 5:5 because you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.
children of the day
Paul’s imagery here is simple but profound. Night is a time of limitation. Darkness forces people indoors. Activities slow. Movement becomes cautious. The unknown presses in from every side. Night is a time of vulnerability, uncertainty, and reduced vision. People close themselves in because they cannot see what might be lurking outside.
But children of the day live differently.
Daylight removes uncertainty. It reveals dangers before they arrive. It allows work, movement, and purpose. Those who live in the day are not paralyzed by fear or caught off guard by surprise. They are alert, active, and ready. A thief may come at night, but children of the day are not living in the shadows. They are awake, sober, and engaged in the work God has given them.
Paul’s point is not merely about time of day. It is about identity.
Unbelievers live in spiritual night—unaware, unprepared, unguarded.
Believers live in spiritual day—aware, awake, and ready for Christ’s return.
The call, then, is not to sit on rooftops scanning the horizon for signs of His coming. It is to stay busy with the work He has assigned. The best preparation for the Lord’s return is faithful obedience in the present. A life filled with the works of the day—love, holiness, service, witness—is a life that will not be surprised when the Lord appears.
Readiness is not passive.
Readiness is active.
Readiness is obedience lived out in the light.
Lord, show us how to stay busy doing what you have called us to do, so that we are always ready for your return.
