Ephesians 6:23-24 (JDV)
Ephesians 6:23 Peace to the brothers and sisters, and care with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 6:24 Favor be with all who have an indestructible1 care for our Lord Jesus Christ.
the cycle of care and favorPaul’s closing blessing is not a polite farewell tacked onto the end of his letter. It is a theological summary of everything he has been teaching, distilled into a cycle of divine care and human response. He begins by pronouncing God’s care—God’s peace, presence, and favor—upon the believers who will hear his words. This care is not fragile or temporary. He calls it indestructible, a love that cannot be eroded by suffering, opposition, or the pressures of the age. It is the steady, initiating love of God that makes the Christian life possible in the first place.
But Paul does not stop with God’s initiative. He immediately moves to the other side of the cycle: God’s favor rests on those who manifest this care. In other words, the care that comes from God produces a corresponding care in the hearts of believers. Divine love awakens human love. Divine faithfulness generates human devotion. Divine care becomes visible in the way believers treat Christ and His people. And when that care is expressed, God responds again with favor, strength, and blessing. The cycle continues.
Prayer is one of the clearest expressions of this returning care. When believers love Christ, they inevitably pray for His church. They intercede for one another. They carry each other’s burdens. They ask God to strengthen, protect, and guide the community. This intercession is not merely a duty; it is the overflow of love. And when believers pray, God pours out more care—more grace, more peace, more strength. The cycle restarts and deepens.
Paul’s vision is profoundly relational. God cares for His people. His people respond with care for Christ and for one another. That care becomes prayer. Prayer draws down more of God’s care. And the cycle continues, shaping a community marked by divine love circulating through every heart.
This is not mechanical. It is the living rhythm of a people who belong to Christ. It is the heartbeat of the church.
Lord, we want to start the cycle in our own community, so we are asking you to bless our local church with an indestructible care for you.
