Matthew 5:38-42
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye in exchange for an eye and a tooth in exchange for a tooth.’
39 But I tell you, Do not retaliate when evil happens. Instead, when someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other cheek as well.
40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41 And if someone forces you to go out of your way one mile, go with him two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you for something, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Getting even
People who do not know God and have no relationship with him are forced to bring about their own justice. Christians do not have to be that way because we know and trust the LORD, and expect eternal justice from him. Consequently, when something evil happens –and it will – we can forgive those responsible. We are not under obligation to get even. Even when people take advantage of us, we are under no obligation to make things right. Our Savior will. By giving more than what is expected, going farther than the required mile, we show that we trust our Savior and depend on him.
LORD, forgive us for seeking retaliation instead of living in trust of your faithfulness.
