Regular worship does not automatically protect a person from evil and sin. In fact, it is in the context of worship that a person is tempted to do a foolish, evil thing. As we approach God, the temptation is to promise him too much – more than we are willing to repay. God takes our worship seriously, and he holds us to our promises. So, the wise thing is to be cautious about what we say in his presence. Guarding our steps means going more to listen than to speak. A rash mouth in his presence is an evil thing.
LORD, protect us from prideful promises. Give us wisdom as we approach your throne in prayer and worship.
