He acts “because of the blood of my covenant with you.”

Zechariah 9 — Judgment, the Coming King, and God’s Salvation

1. Judgment on Israel’s Enemies (9:1–8)

  • God’s word comes against:
    • Hadrach and Damascus
    • Hamath
    • Tyre and Sidon (wealthy, fortified, proud)
    • Philistine cities (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, Ashdod)
  • Tyre’s wealth and defenses cannot save her—God strips her bare.
  • Philistia’s pride is cut off; their abominations removed.
  • Some from Philistia become a remnant for God, like a clan in Judah.
  • God encamps around His house as a guard—no oppressor will pass through again.
  • Point: God dismantles hostile powers and protects His people with His own presence.

2. The Coming King of Zion (9:9–10)

  • Zion is called to rejoice—her King is coming.
  • His character:
    • Righteous
    • Having salvation
    • Humble
    • Mounted on a donkey (symbol of peace, not conquest)
  • His mission:
    • End warfare among God’s people (no chariot, warhorse, or battle bow).
    • Speak peace to the nations.
    • Rule “from sea to sea… to the ends of the earth.”
  • Point: God’s Messiah brings global peace through humility, not military might.

3. Covenant Deliverance and Restoration (9:11–12)

  • Because of the blood of the covenant, God frees prisoners from the “waterless pit.”
  • Exiles are called “prisoners of hope.”
  • God promises to restore them double.
  • Point: God’s covenant love guarantees deliverance and abundant restoration.

4. God’s People as His Weapon (9:13–17)

  • Judah becomes God’s bow; Ephraim His arrow.
  • God stirs Zion against Greece—He fights through His people.
  • The Lord appears over them, sounding the trumpet.
  • God protects them; they triumph over enemies.
  • His people shine like jewels in a crown.
  • The land flourishes with grain and new wine.
  • Point: God empowers His people, saves them, and makes them radiant in His land.

Zechariah 10 — Restoration for Judah and Israel

1. God Alone Provides What Idols Cannot (10:1–2)

  • The people must ask the Lord for rain—He alone sends storms and growth.
  • Household gods and diviners offer lies, false dreams, and empty comfort.
  • As a result, the people wander like sheep without a shepherd.
  • Point: Idols cannot guide or provide; only God gives life and direction.

2. God Judges False Shepherds and Cares for His Flock (10:3–5)

  • God’s anger burns against corrupt leaders (“shepherds”).
  • The Lord Himself cares for Judah and makes them like a majestic warhorse.
  • From Judah will come:
    • The cornerstone
    • The tent peg
    • The battle bow
    • Every ruler
  • God’s people become mighty warriors because the Lord is with them.
  • Point: God replaces failed leaders with His own righteous rule and empowers His people.

3. God Restores and Reunites His People (10:6–9)

  • God strengthens Judah and saves Joseph (northern tribes).
  • He brings them back because of His compassion.
  • They become as though they had never been rejected.
  • God whistles for them—His redeemed flock—and gathers them.
  • Even in far countries, they remember Him and return with their children.
  • Point: God reunites the divided kingdom and restores them as one people.

4. God Brings His People Home in Power (10:10–12)

  • God gathers them from Egypt and Assyria.
  • He brings them into the land until there is no more room.
  • He passes through the sea of troubles, striking down its waves.
  • The pride of Assyria and the scepter of Egypt fall.
  • God makes His people strong, and they walk in His name.
  • Point: God overcomes every obstacle to bring His people home and make them strong in Him.
