Mark 9:19-24

¹⁹ He answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer will I be among you? How much longer will I bear with you? Bring him to me.” ²⁰ And they brought him to him. When the spirit saw him, it just then convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. ²¹ He asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. ²² It has often even thrown him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.” ²³ Jesus said to him, “If you are able!– All things can be done for the one who believes.” ²⁴ Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Jesus is frustrated by our unbelief but he responds to us if we come to him with our doubts, instead of pretence. Perhaps we are in a generation which has conceded so much biblical truth that we are embarrassed to plead with our Saviour. We need to come to Jesus in honest desperation and plead for him to help us overcome. He wants to show us how much is possible. But nothing else should get the credit – even our own faith.

LORD, we trust you – not our faith, or anyone else’s faith. Deliver us!
