Luke 9:1-50. The disciples had been sent out on a short-term missions trip, preparing them for obeying the great commission later. Meanwhile, everyone is perplexed – like Herod – because it was hard to nail down who Jesus really was.
- Was he a resurrected prophet of old (8,19)?
- Was he the Christ, the chosen Son of God (20,35)?
- Was he the Son of Man who will come in the glory of his Father’s holiness (26,29)?
- Was he the Son of Man who was presently demonstrating God’s majesty by performing miracles (10-17; 37-43)?
- Was he the Son of Man who was about to be delivered into the hands of men for torture and death (22,44)?
All this time the Holy Spirit was revealing to the disciples aspects of Jesus’ true identity and mission. The disciples did not have a complete Christology, but that did not stop them from following their master.
LORD, lead us to a more complete understanding of who you are – but until we get there, help us to put our faith in the you we know.
