Luke 3:23-4:13. Luke included a family tree for Jesus, but for a different reason than Matthew did. Matthew was only interested in proving that Jesus was the descendent of Abraham through David. Luke goes all the way back to Adam, and concludes with “the son of God.” He had just recorded the Father’s words at Jesus’ baptism: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased (3:22).
Next, Luke records the temptation ordeal Jesus went through in the wilderness. Satan was testing Jesus to see if he really was the Son of God (4:3,9). Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, and was able to prevail through the wilderness experience, unlike the exodus generation of the Israelites who died during their 40 year wilderness experience.
Next, the Son of God – full of the Holy Spirit, will begin his conquest of the promised land.
LORD, fill us with your Holy Spirit, that we might overcome temptation, and be ready for ministry.
