a day in the life of heaven’s king

Matthew 14 27 Matthew 14.  Herod celebrated his birthday by murdering John the Baptist.  It was a tragedy for the kingdom of heaven brought about by the lust and fear of one of earth’s kings.

  1. Later, when Herod learned of the success of Jesus’ ministry, his fears returned. He was sure that John had been raised from the dead to torment his guilty conscience (1-12).
  2. Meanwhile, at the end of a busy day of ministry, Jesus learns of his friend’s senseless death.  He sought to get away and grieve privately, but the crowds kept coming, even in the desolate place.  There he fed the 5000 (13-21).
  3. He finally got the chance to go up on the mountain by himself to pray.  Hours later, his disciples are in trouble in the boat, so he walks out to greet them.  Peter learns a lesson about faith (22-33).
  4. The next day is also filled with ministry as the region all around Gennesaret flock to see Jesus, and many are healed simply by touching the fringe of his garment (34-36).

LORD, we are thankful that you always make time to show compassion on us.  You will always be there when we need you. We don’t need to be afraid.
